October 7, 1571
As the peoples of the Christian West confront an invasion of a different sort, we should acknowledge the anniversary of our great victory at Lepanto, where the Holy League, "a sometimes-flimsy coalition of Pope Pius V, Spain, Venice, Genoa, Savoy, Naples, the Knights of Malta and others" defeated the massed navy of an aggressive and expansionist Ottoman Empire on this day in 1571. As a result, the Ottomans, who earlier in the 16th century had been turned back at the gates of Vienna, "lost their control of the seas, especially in the western part of the Mediterranean."

In memory of the victory, the Church celebrates October 7 as the Feast of the Holy Rosary. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia:
Heaven has on many occasions rewarded the faith of those who had recourse to this devotion in times of special danger. More particularly, the naval victory of Lepanto gained by Don John of Austria over the Turkish fleet on the first Sunday of October in 1571 responded wonderfully to the processions made at Rome on that same day by the members of the Rosary confraternity. St. Pius V thereupon ordered that a commemoration of the Rosary should be made upon that day...
Unfortunately, however, Cathcon tells us:
Scandalously, the captured Turkish standard that rested near his tomb was returned to Istanbul in 1965 in a fruitless act of goodwill.
For more on Lepanto, see Wikipedia and Tradition in Action, which reminds us:
Many Christian knights, soldiers, and sailors have died defending Christendom against the onslaughts of Islam down through the centuries. Today, the borders of many European countries, Canada, and the United States are practically wide open, and the old enemy is invited to come in and make himself at home. And many 'Christians' in the West are just too busy enjoying their material prosperity to be bothered with unpleasant history.
But the enemy has not forgotten history. He remembers it all too well, and he is still deadly serious about his religion. His goal over the years has not changed in the slightest, and he is very patient. The enemy within is now smiling, just biding his time.
And long dead Christian knights, our ancestors in the Faith, are probably turning over in their graves right about now, trying desperately to shout out a warning. The final chapter, it seems, has yet to be written....
